Share Your Favourite Motorcycle Ride
Creating a route allows you to share your favourite motorcycle rides with other members of the Your2Wheels community.
Whether it’s a scenic coastal ride, a twisty back-country adventure or your favourite Sunday morning coffee run, every route helps riders discover more of New Zealand.
A great route is more than simply getting from one place to another—it’s about sharing the journey and the places that make it memorable.
Before You Begin
Before creating your route, it’s helpful to have:
- A route title
- A planned route or GPX file (optional)
- A destination
- Planned stops along the way
- Photos (recommended)
Creating Your Route
To create a new route:
- Select Routes from the main navigation menu.
- Click Create Route.
- Enter a title and description for your route.
- Create your route using the mapping tools or upload a GPX file.
- Add your route locations, including your start point, finish point and any planned stops.
- Select or create the destination for your ride.
- Choose whether to publish the route publicly or associate it with one of your groups.
- Add photos and any additional ride information.
- Review your route before publishing.
- Save or submit your route.
Once published, your route will be available according to its privacy settings.
Associating a Route with a Group
Routes can be shared with the entire Your2Wheels community or associated with one of your groups.
If you associate a route with a group, it automatically inherits that group’s privacy settings.
For example:
- Public Group – The route will be visible to anyone who can view that group.
- Private Group – The route will only be visible to approved members of that private group.
If you do not associate the route with a group, it will be published as a Public Route for the wider Your2Wheels community.
Selecting a Destination
Every route should finish at a destination.
Before creating a new destination, search to see if it already exists.
Using existing destinations helps keep the Your2Wheels database organised and avoids duplicate entries.
If the destination doesn’t exist, you can create one during the route creation process.
Adding Route Locations and Stops
As you build your route, you can add important locations such as:
- Start point
- Finish point
- Fuel stops
- Coffee stops
- Lunch stops
- Scenic stops
- Rest breaks
- Regrouping points
These locations become part of your route and help riders better understand the journey.
Using the Points of Interest Database
Your2Wheels includes a growing database of Points of Interest (POIs) to help you discover interesting places throughout New Zealand.
Although POIs are not directly linked to routes, they are an excellent planning resource.
Before adding stops to your route, browse the POI database to discover places such as:
- Scenic lookouts
- Fuel stations
- Cafés and restaurants
- Public toilets
- Rest areas
- Historic landmarks
- Visitor attractions
You can then manually add these locations as stops within your route, creating a richer and more enjoyable riding experience for others.
Adding a GPX File
If you’ve planned your ride using a GPS device or route planning software, you can upload a GPX file when creating your route.
Uploading a GPX file allows other riders to download and follow your planned route using compatible GPS devices and navigation apps.
If you don’t have a GPX file, you can still create a complete route using the built-in mapping tools.
Updating Route Parameters
When creating your route, Your2Wheels may automatically calculate the distance and estimated travel time using mapping data.
These estimates are a helpful starting point but may not always reflect your planned motorcycle ride.
For example, your route may include:
- Scenic detours
- Rest breaks
- Coffee or lunch stops
- Fuel stops
- Gravel roads
- Slower scenic roads
- Regrouping points
If the automatically calculated distance or estimated duration isn’t accurate, you can manually update the route parameters to better reflect the actual ride.
Providing realistic ride times helps other riders plan their day and know what to expect before setting off.
Adding Photos
Photos help riders see what makes your route special.
Consider including:
- Scenic roads
- Mountain passes
- Coastal views
- Popular stopping points
- Your destination
- Interesting attractions along the ride
High-quality photos make your route more engaging and encourage other members to explore it.

The best routes don’t simply tell riders where to go—they help them enjoy the journey.
When creating a route, think about:

- Safe places to regroup
- Fuel availability
- Food and coffee stops
- Scenic viewpoints
