Creating Safe and Enjoyable Rides
A successful ride isn’t measured by speed or distance—it’s measured by whether everyone enjoys the experience and arrives home safely.
As a ride organiser, your role is to create an enjoyable environment where riders of all experience levels feel welcome.
Plan Ahead
Good rides begin with good planning.
Before the ride:
- Check the weather forecast.
- Review the planned route.
- Identify fuel stops.
- Plan rest breaks.
- Consider rider experience levels.
Preparation helps prevent unnecessary problems during the ride.
Communicate Clearly
Before leaving, let riders know:
- The planned route.
- Scheduled stops.
- Expected ride pace.
- Regrouping locations.
- Any hazards or road conditions.
Clear communication helps everyone feel more confident.
Ride Within the Group’s Ability
Not every rider has the same level of experience.
Choose a pace that suits the group and encourage riders to ride at a speed they’re comfortable with.
Nobody should ever feel pressured to ride beyond their ability.
Use Safe Regrouping Points
Choose locations where riders can safely pull over without obstructing traffic.
Examples include:
- Service stations
- Large car parks
- Rest areas
- Scenic lookouts
Avoid stopping in unsafe locations simply to keep the group together.
Encourage Good Riding Etiquette
Remind riders to:
- Follow all New Zealand road rules.
- Maintain safe following distances.
- Respect other road users.
- Ride predictably.
- Look out for one another.
Courtesy and patience help create a positive experience for everyone.
Be Flexible
Sometimes conditions change.
Weather, road works, traffic or unexpected delays may require changes to the ride.
Be prepared to adapt your plans while keeping riders informed.
Finish on a Positive Note
After the ride:
- Thank everyone for attending.
- Encourage riders to share photos and experiences.
- Ask for feedback.
- Consider creating another event.
The friendships built during a ride are often just as important as the ride itself.
