Sharing Motorcycle Routes
When creating a route on Your2Wheels, you have the option to upload a GPX or KML file.
These files contain route information that can be used with many GPS devices and navigation apps, allowing other riders to download and follow your planned ride.
What is a GPX File?
A GPX (GPS Exchange Format) file is the most common file format used for sharing motorcycle routes.
It stores information such as:
- Route paths
- GPS coordinates
- Waypoints
- Track information
Most motorcycle GPS devices and navigation apps support GPX files, making them the preferred format for sharing routes on Your2Wheels.
If you’re exporting a route from your navigation software, GPX is usually the best option.
What is a KML File?
A KML (Keyhole Markup Language) file is another format used for sharing map information.
Originally developed for Google Earth, KML files can also store routes, locations and map data.
Some route planning software allows you to export routes as KML files, and Your2Wheels supports these files as well.
Which Format Should I Use?
Both GPX and KML files are supported on Your2Wheels.
However, GPX is the recommended format because it is compatible with most motorcycle GPS devices and navigation apps.
If your route planning software gives you the choice, select GPX whenever possible.
Do I Need a GPX or KML File?
No.
Uploading a GPX or KML file is optional.
You can still create and share a route using the built-in mapping tools available on Your2Wheels.
Either way, once the route is created, other members may be able to download the route as a GPX or KML file and use it with their preferred navigation app or GPS device.
Uploading a file is simply useful if you have already planned the route elsewhere.
Where Do GPX and KML Files Come From?
Many route planning websites, motorcycle navigation apps and GPS devices allow you to export your routes as GPX or KML files.
If you’re already using route planning software, look for an Export or Download option.
