If you’ve renewed your motorcycle rego recently, you may have noticed a change in the price. From 1 July 2026, ACC moved motorcycles from two engine-size groups to three and changed the levy charged to each group. It also introduced a discount for eligible riders who complete a Ride Forever Gold course.

What does your bike’s engine size mean for the levy?

For petrol motorcycles, the annual ACC levy now looks like this:

MotorcycleACC levy from 1 July 2026Change from 2025/26
250 cc or less$311.70Down $9.47
251-600 cc$442.18Up $121.01
601-750 cc$442.18Up $13.99
751 cc and over$624.93Up $196.74

The two middle rows now form one 251-750 cc levy group. We’ve shown them separately so you can see how much the change is compared with the previous year. Mopeds have a separate ACC levy of $86.93, down $20.16.

These amounts are the ACC component of a 12-month rego, not the total amount you pay to license your bike. They show why two riders in the same new group might have seen very different increases at renewal.

How does the Ride Forever discount work?

ACC’s new Rider Reward gives eligible riders 25% off their motorcycle ACC levy after completing an approved Ride Forever Gold course. It does not take 25% off the whole rego bill.

To qualify, you need a New Zealand driver licence and the motorcycle must be registered in your name. Your Gold course must have been completed on or after 1 July 2025, before you buy or renew your rego. You must buy or renew the rego on or after 1 July 2026 and be purchased or renewed within two years of completing the course.

If you meet the requirements, ACC says the discount is applied automatically when you license a motorcycle registered in your name. It can apply to more than one bike and to multiple rego renewals during the two-year eligibility period. ACC recommends waiting two business days after the course before renewing, so the completion record has time to reach NZTA.

What should you check at your next renewal?

Check your bike’s engine capacity and compare the ACC portion of your rego with the correct group. If you’ve completed Ride Forever Gold, make sure the course date falls within the eligibility period and that the bike is registered in your name.

If you believe you qualified but the discount did not appear, ACC says you can ask NZTA to investigate a partial levy refund. You can find the full rules and current figures on ACC’s motorcycle levy changes page.

Have the new levy rates changed what you pay, or have you taken advantage of the Ride Forever Gold discount?
